See this years Expeditions and Guiding Questions

In the 2007/08 school year, our students embarked on the following classroom expeditions:

  Audrey (Pre-K/K):  Rocks, Minerals and Geology
  • What would a rock tell us if it could talk?  What is a rock cycle?  What does the rock cycle teach us?

  Suzanne (K/1):  Part 1:  Animals From Eggs.  Part 2:  Seeds
  • How do things change and grow?  How do we change and grow?

  Lori (1/2):  Dogs and Coyotes
  • Part 1:  What makes a dog a dog?  What do dogs need to be happy and healthy?  How do dogs enrich our lives?
  • Part 2:  How and where do coyotes live?  (A habitat study through the lens of a coyote.)  What characteristics have helped the coyote to survive and thrive?  What were Native American's beliefs and feelings about the coyote?  What are present day feelings and beliefs about coyotes?

  Lisa A (2/3):   Habitats and Ecosystems
  • What is an ecosystem?  What is a habitat? What causes it to change?  Why do we care?

  Alan (3rd): Railroads
  • Where were the local railroads? Why were they needed and why did they disappear?

  Merry (3/4):  Tending the Wild
  • What can we learn from the first Californians about becoming stewards of California's environment?  What does modern science teach us about the stewardship of California's environment?

  Ann (5): Heroes of American History
  • What makes a hero a hero?  What character traits does a hero display?  How did American heroes make a difference?  What can I do to make a difference?

  Lisa J (5/6):  Part 1:  Physical Fitness.  How does physical fitness benefit me?
  • Part 2: Roman Empire - Innovations and Technology

  Cynthia (6/7):  A Thousand Years Without a Bath
  • What was light about the Dark Ages?  What design principles and character traits were present during the Middle Ages?

  Deborah (7/8): Golden Gamble:  Golden Past/Golden Future
  • What is the legacy of gold mining in Nevada County?  How will reopening the Idaho-Maryland Mine impact Nevada County? How can Grass Valley retain its golden heritage and sustain a golden future?
